How to install Roman blinds inside or outside the recess

Before fitting your Roman blinds, you need to decide whether to fit them – inside the window recess or outside of it. Each option provides a different look and has its own considerations.

Inside recess fitting

The inside recess mounting gives a clean and sleek look as the blinds fit snugly within the window frame. An inside placement appears elegant, but be sure to check that sufficient space is available for the top fittings. Ideal for windows with deep recesses or when you want a more minimalistic style.

Now that you are prepared to fit your Roman blinds, here is how:

Step 1: Measure and mark

First, you have to decide how to fit your Roman blinds: you can choose from top-fixing or face-fixing.

The top fix involves installing the screws from the bottom up through the top of the brackets. This method is typically used when attaching blinds to the ceiling or the top of a window recess.

Face fixing refers to fitting the screws through the back of the brackets directly onto a vertical surface, like a wall.

Measure the width and height of the recess. Mark the bracket positions on the inside top of the recess using a pencil, ensuring the blind won’t interfere with window handles or other obstructions and will have enough space to fold. Use the spirit level to make sure the marks are even.

Note: With the brackets removed, drill and fit rawl plugs if necessary. Use wall plugs for plaster and masonry walls. We recommend securing a wooden batten to the wall for plaster walls to ensure a strong hold.

Step 2: Drill and fix brackets

Drill holes at the spots where you made your pencil marks, then insert wall plugs if necessary. Screw the brackets into place securely, ensuring they are level.

Step 3: Attach the Roman blind

Once the brackets are attached, you have to mount the track.

The method for hanging Roman blinds depends on the specific model. Some models have pins on the brackets and corresponding slot holes in the headrail. To fit this blind, push the blind upwards so the pins pass through the slot holes, then secure it with wing nuts. Other models have a recess in the headrail, allowing you to clip it onto the brackets easily.

Step 4: Install the child safety device

Mark an appropriate position for mounting the safety device, ensuring it keeps the chain taut. It’s important to install the chain safety device as far as possible from the control mechanism to prevent the looped chain from becoming loose. The device should be mounted no lower than 150 cm from the floor.

Step 5: Test the blind

Pull the cords to lower and raise the blind, ensuring it operates smoothly and evenly.

Outside recess installation

Mounting your blinds outside the window frame can cover more of the window and block more light.
A great option if the window frame is narrow or obstructed by handles. An outside recess placement will make windows appear larger and is a good solution for windows where curtains cannot be placed.

  1. Measure and mark – Measure the width and height of the area where you want the blind to cover, adding extra width (at least 50mm on each side) to ensure full window coverage. Mark the positions where the brackets will be placed above and to the sides of the window.
  2. Drill and fix brackets – Drill holes and insert the wall plugs if necessary. Then, fix the brackets into place with screws. Ensure they are level by using a spirit level.
  3. Attach the Roman blind – Just like with the inside recess fitting, clip the headrail into the brackets until it’s locked securely.
  4. Install the child safety device – Fix the safety device to the wall to keep cords tidy and out of reach of children.
  5. Test the blind – Test the blinds by pulling the cords up and down to ensure smooth operation.

Tips to make the installation easier

  • Plan around obstacles: When measuring for either fitting method, account for any obstructions like window handles, tiles, or radiators.
  • Use a spirit level: For a perfectly aligned blind, always double-check your bracket placement with a spirit level.
  • Add extra width for outside fittings: To minimise light seeping through the edges, consider adding an extra 70mm to the width measurement.
  • Safety first: Always install a child safety device for any blinds with cords to prevent potential hazards.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Incorrect measurements: Double-check both the width and height of your window to ensure the blind fits perfectly.
  • Skipping the safety device: Don’t skip installing the safety device —especially in homes with children.
  • Not considering window obstructions: Make sure blinds are placed far enough from window handles to operate smoothly.

Maintenance tips for Roman blinds

Once the installation is complete, you still have to care for and maintain your Roman blinds. That’s very easy, here are a few important things to remember:

Clean regularly. Vacuum your Roman blinds regularly using an upholstery attachment to remove dust and dirt.

Remove spots. Use a damp cloth and mild detergent to clean the fabric gently if you see any stains. Always check the fabric care instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Avoid moisture: Roman blinds aren’t typically designed for damp areas like bathrooms, as humidity can damage the fabric. Use in dry spaces like living rooms or bedrooms.

There’s no need to go through this laborious process. Leave the blind fitting to a specialist!
