Boiler inspection vs. Gas safety checks

There’s a key distinction between boiler servicing and gas safety checks. A boiler service is a detailed inspection of the boiler, whether it runs on gas or solid fuel, to ensure optimal performance and safety. During the service, the engineer will assess the appliance thoroughly, and if necessary, they may repair or replace smaller parts to boost efficiency and safety. On the other hand, a gas safety check is a mandatory examination of all gas appliances in your home, not just the boiler. This check focuses on ensuring that gas connections and appliances are safe but does not involve any repairs. The engineer will only identify potential issues and recommend further action if required.

Both services are crucial and should never be skipped, as carbon monoxide-related incidents remain a significant safety concern in the UK each year. Regular checks help prevent these risks and keep your household safe.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How often should my boiler be serviced?

A: Your boiler should be serviced once a year to ensure it operates efficiently and safely. Additionally, annual servicing can help prolong the lifespan of your boiler and reduce energy bills by maintaining optimal performance.

Q: Do I need a boiler service or repair?

A: The main difference is that a boiler servicing session can help you prevent the need to hire a boiler repair specialist. During your boiler servicing session, the engineer will test and inspect your boiler and repair only minor issues. Still, if he finds any potential problems, he will inform you in detail so you can book a boiler repair specialist.

Q: Gas safety certificate or boiler service - what to choose?

A: If you feel confused about which one is the right for you, let's clarify it. The boiler service covers all boilers, not only gas burning. Also, the engineer may replace a seal or the old fluid.  For a difference, the gas safety checkup covers all gas appliances in your property, including gas ovens, gas hobs and gas fireplaces. However, the key difference is that the specialist will only point out the potential issues without attempting to fix them.

Q: Do you offer any boiler cover plans?

A: Yes, we do offer two boiler insurance options to suit the needs of homeowners and landlords. Just contact us and ask about our boiler cover and central heating plans.

Q: What is the best time to arrange my annual boiler service appointment?

A: We recommend getting your boiler serviced during the summer or the early autumn due to the lower demand for heating engineers at that time of year.   Leaving boilers inactive for extended periods can lead to heating system stagnation and blockages resulting in more repairs. Early servicing will give you enough time to deal with all the issues.

Q: What is your coverage?

A: The service is available in the entire London M25 zone, but you can quickly check the availability in your area by using our booking form or calling us.

Q: What to do if I smell gas in my property?

A: There are four steps you can take if you smell gas or suspect a leak:

  • ensure that all electrical appliances and lights are off
  • open your windows and leave the property
  • call the National Gas Emergency Service hotline (0800 111 999)
  • wait near the area until qualified personnel arrives.
